Autumn Breaks on Exmoor

As the temperature begins to fall, the days shorten and a sense of calm descends upon the Moor, except that is, in the Red Deer community, where havoc takes hold as we enter the annual Deer Rut.

Those fortunate enough to have witnessed the clashing of antlers, the magical sounds that echo from Combe to Combe of the roaring Stags and the rounding-up of the hinds will, I’m sure, endorse the sense of drama that unfolds before you.

The Heather and Gorse start to dominate the Heathland around Dunkery, North Hill and Holdstone Down, awash with Purple and Gold, as do the colours starting to change in the wooded combes like Horner Woods, Watersmeet and Dunster Park. The overall landscape starts to take on a different complexion, like an artist’s palette, transfixing those lucky enough to be able to witness Exmoor in all her splendour, leaving a lasting impression on one’s memory, like a huge canvas, definitely a time of year to bring your camera with you.

Walking or Riding the Moor at this time of year is breath-taking, as too, is the Exmoor Safari that departs from the Inn daily, offering Wildlife Tours to guests and visitors alike. Fly Fishing on the Moor’s rivers and Reservoirs can be a thrilling experience, especially as the Salmon start to run as the rivers come into flood.
